Description

Stone House, also known as the Judge's Lodgings, is a timber-framed house that was refronted in the early 18th century. The south side of the building displays visible timbering and features a gable that overhangs on brackets, while the east front facing the street is covered in stucco. The house has three storeys, a tiled roof, and a heavy moulded wooden cornice with modillion eaves, decorated with egg and dart moulding below. Above the first floor, there is a slightly projecting moulded cornice above each window, and a curved pediment over the central first-floor window. The ground floor cornice is without projections. The windows are framed with moulded architrave surrounds and retain their glazing bars. The doorcase is notable for its fluted Corinthian columns, curved pediment, and a tympanum enriched with pargetting of foliage, which includes the date 1716. The door itself has ten fielded panels.

Inside, the house features an early 18th-century oak staircase with turned balusters on each step, scrolled tread ends, and a newel post designed as a Corinthian column. There is a 17th-century stone fireplace with an overmantel. The first floor contains early 18th-century panelling and pedimented doorcases with strapwork pilasters. A marble fireplace with strapwork motifs and pilasters topped by terms is also present. Additionally, there is an early 19th-century staircase with scrolled tread ends. This building was formerly known as the Judge's House.

Stone House is part of a group that includes Nos 26 to 36 (even), 40 to 46 (even), and 50 to 70 (even).
