Description

This is an early 17th century house pair, located on Benover Road in Yalding. The property was later altered. It is timber-framed, with the front elevation rendered and featuring exposed full-height posts. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The original building likely comprised two bays to the left of centre, with a possible further two bays to the right. The front elevation may have been rebuilt in the late 17th or 18th century, with three full-height posts defining the two left bays. Exposed midrail and three studs are visible to the right of centre. The roof is half-hipped to the left and gabled to the right. Brick gable-end stacks are present on both the left and right sides of the building. The fenestration is irregular, consisting of four casement windows: a three-light window to the left end, a two-light window in the left-central bay, a three-light window towards the right end, and a leaded single light under the right stack. A brick lean-to porch with a ribbed door projects from the right end of the left bay, providing access to Little Benover Cottage. Well Cottage has a boarded door within a similar porch on its right end. Rendered lean-to additions extend from the left side, and a red and grey brick lean-to with a rendered gable extends from the right side. A partial inspection of the interior of Little Benover Cottage revealed three late 16th or early 17th century gunstock-jowled posts forming a rear wall, with the central post not aligned with the front elevation post. A tie-beam is present next to the right post, with a clasped-purlin truss above it, and further framing is thought to exist to the right. The property was formerly known as Myrtle Cottage and Linton Cottage.
