Description

Ivy Cottage is a house dating primarily from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the late 17th century. It is timber framed with plaster infilling, and has a plain tile roof. The house has three timber-framed bays, with the central bay originally built as a smoke bay. A stack was likely added in the late 17th century.

The house sits on a flint plinth and has low storeys. It exhibits an underbuilt gable-end jetty to the left. The timber framing shows broadly-spaced studs, with tension braces to the central and right bays on the ground floor, and one brace to each end on the first floor. The roof is steeply pitched and hipped, with a gablet to the left. A red and grey brick ridge stack is positioned to the left of centre, within the left end of the central bay. There are two small two-light eaves dormers with hipped plain tile roofs. A blocked four-light diamond mullion window is located to the right end of the central bay; another blocked window is positioned towards the right end. The ground-floor windows are irregular, with a two-light casement to the left bay, and a three-light casement to the right. A ribbed door is set within a bracketed lean-to hood at the left end of the long right bay. There's a painted flint lean-to to the left end, and a timber-framed lean-to with painted brick infilling to the right end. A single-storey painted brick rear addition is on the right. The interior has not been inspected, but is documented in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments report No. 31677, November 1970.
