Description
River Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, which was restored in the late 20th century. It features a timber frame with rendered infilling, a painted brick left gable end on the ground floor, and tile-hanging above. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has five timber-framed bays, with the left end being short. The house stands two storeys high on a flint plinth and has a continuous jetty supported by solid-spandrel brackets, which formerly returned along the left gable end on a dragon post. The framing is broadly spaced, with tension braces located at the left end of the ground floor and both ends of the first floor, as well as a pair between the central and left-central bays on each floor. The roof is hipped, and there is a brick ridge stack positioned to the right of centre, at the right end of the right-central bay. The windows are irregularly arranged and consist of three leaded casements: one three-light towards the left end, one two-light towards the centre, and one two-light to the right. The entrance features a ribbed door within a painted brick porch topped with a hipped plain tile roof beneath the stack.
Inside, the house showcases exposed framing, with a dragon beam and axial joists in the short left end bay. There is a chamfered axial beam in both the left-central and central bays, along with a cross-beam that is morticed for a partition between them, which has an arch-braced first-floor partition above. Another cross-beam and an arch-braced tie-beam are located several feet to the left of the stack. The principal posts have shaped jowls, and there is a complete four-light diamond mullion window on the rear side of the first floor. Additionally, there is a brick fireplace with a wooden bressumer to the left side of the stack.
