Description

The stone cross in the churchyard of the Parish Church of St Mary and St Eanswythe in Folkestone dates from 1897. It features an octagonal pillar with a moulded base, topped by a carved panel that depicts the Crucifixion and is capped by a cross. The cross is set on four medieval stone steps. Historically, according to a charter of Edward III, the burgesses of Folkestone would meet annually at this churchyard cross on the feast of the Nativity of Our Lady (8th September) to elect the Mayor.
