Description

Upper Maxted Street Farm is a farmhouse dating from around 1739, though it likely has earlier origins. It features chequered red and grey brick and has a plain tile roof. The building follows a lobby entry plan with one room on each side of the stack and includes a late 20th-century addition on the left. The farmhouse is two storeys high with a garret, a plat band, and a cogged brick eaves cornice. The half-hipped roof has a red and grey brick ridge stack that is slightly off-centre to the right of the 18th-century section. The front has a regular arrangement of three windows, each with three-light multi-pane casements. The ground floor has similar windows with segmental relieving arches. A half-glazed door is located behind a central brick porch that has a weatherboarded gable and a plain tile roof. Above the door is a datestone from 1739 featuring a heart, along with a Sun Insurance plaque.

Inside, the farmhouse incorporates timber from an early 16th-century or earlier house. There is a chamfered axial beam that is off-centre towards the front of the left ground-floor room, and a cross beam between the left room and the entrance lobby that shows traces of moulding and brattishing. Another cross beam is located to the right of the stack, along with re-used joists in the right room. The first floor also contains more re-used timber, including parts of a moulded octagonal crown post. The roof features staggered butt purlins, and there is a brick fireplace with a wooden bressumer. The first-floor landing has early 18th-century splat balusters.
