Description
This former barn, located about 50 meters west of Postling Court, dates from the 18th century and incorporates a medieval frame. It underwent a later 18th-century addition and was converted into four houses in the 1980s. The structure is timber framed, previously weatherboarded but now has rendered infilling, and features a plain tile roof. It consists of eight timber-framed bays, with four and a half bays from the medieval frame likely re-erected in the 18th century. The south truss has been partly replaced, and an additional three timber-framed bays were added to the south later in the 18th century. The building stands at one and a half storeys on a brick plinth with a hipped roof and includes an assortment of skylights, approximately ten windows, and four doors—two towards the center and one at each end. There are two rear porches, one gabled and the other with a jettied canopy on brackets.
Inside, there are five north trusses featuring gun stock-jowled arcade posts of heavy scantling, which are morticed for passing shores and arch-braces but truncated towards the bases. The tie-beams are not morticed for corresponding braces, and the aisles now have straight braces from aisle-ties to arcade posts. The arcade plate has a face-halved scarf-joint. Scribed carpenter's marks can be found on the arcade posts, while chiseled marks appear on the backs of the same posts, as well as on the arcade plates and braces. The posts of the south (sixth) truss have been replaced, but the braces are marked in sequence with the trusses to the north. The arcade posts of the three southern bays are of smaller scantling with cut jowls. The roof is a common rafter type with clasped purlins and a ridge-piece throughout.
