Description
Shepway Cross is a war memorial erected in 1923, dedicated to the bravery of the men of the Cinque Ports. It is designed in the Perpendicular style and features an ashlar cross set on a four-step octagonal base. The octagonal tapering shaft is topped with a crucifix, depicting Christ flanked by the Virgin Mary and the Apostle John on one side, and the Virgin and Child on the other. The chamfered octagonal base displays four shields representing the towns of the Cinque Ports. Surrounding the monument is a low stone rubble wall with angled corners. The foundation stone was laid by William, the 7th Earl Beauchamp, who was also the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and an Admiral, in 1923. The cross was a gift from the Earl Beauchamp, situated on land donated by the owner of Lympne Castle.
