Description

The Shrubbery is a house dating back to the 16th century, with significant extensions and alterations in the early 18th century and the late 19th century. It is constructed of timber framing, now rendered and brick, with red brick detailing and slate roofs. The front elevation has two storeys and an attic, featuring two flat-roofed dormers and chimney stacks to the left and right. There are three sash windows with glazing bars on each floor. A projecting two-storey wing to the left has a hipped slate roof and chimney stack. A half-glazed door is situated in a square porch with stained glass on the right return. A rear half-hipped wing features a plinth and plat band, with a central stack.

The original 16th-century portion of the interior retains quirk and tongue chamfered stopped spine beams with run-out stops, and a roof with braced collar ties; however, it lacks purlins. The 18th-century section includes a geometric staircase, neo-classical marble fireplaces, dado panelling, and shuttered windows, with all interior fittings remaining in good condition. A wall, approximately 6 feet high and extending about 25 metres by 25 metres, encloses the rear garden. This wall incorporates three “beeboles”, which are low, decorative stone features with triangular tops, along its eastern edge.
