Description

This building, originally the Town Gaol, now comprises two small houses and a shop at 3, 5, 9, and 11 St Peter's Street. It is a timber-framed structure largely refronted in brick during the 17th century. The facade is a mix of painted areas, washed stone-coloured sections, plastered areas, and cemented portions. The building is two storeys high with five windows in total. Numbers 3 and 5 retain large 17th-century casement windows, each with four lights separated by wooden transoms and mullions. Number 9 features an 18th-century sash window with intact glazing bars on the first floor, and a smaller, modern shop window below. The building has two doorways with pilasters, originally brick but the southern ones now cemented, each topped with a pediment. A passage with studded timber-framed walls runs through the building, connecting to number 7 at the rear. Numbers 3 to 11 (odd) are historically significant as a group.
