Description

The Guildhall, built in 1579, is a significant historical building. In 1812, it was encased in yellow brick, and in 1912, it underwent restoration with the addition of the south-west wing. The building was further enlarged in 1933, and a new addition was constructed in 1973 at right angles across the square. Currently, no features from before the 1812 encasement are visible from the exterior, which is made of brick and imitation timbering. However, the interior retains much of the original work, including the Court Room panelling from 1607 and paintings on the walls of the Council Chamber that depict the battle of the "Glorious 1st of June."
