Description

Carter House is an L-shaped house from the 18th century, standing two to three storeys tall with an attic. The building has been refronted in cement and features a tiled roof with a curved gable and two dormers. It has a moulded eaves cornice and five sash windows on the south street elevation, along with two sash windows on the Middle Street elevation, both retaining their glazing bars. Mrs. Elizabeth Carter, a scholar, author, and friend of Dr. Johnson, lived here from 1762 until her death in 1806. Carter House is part of a group that includes Nos 2 to 16 (even) and Cheyne Cottage on Middle Street.
