Description
The Baptist Chapel in Eythorne, dated 1804, is a Grade II listed building. It is constructed of rendered red brick, with the brick exposed on the return elevations, and features a plain tiled roof. The chapel has a plinth and a pediment-shaped parapet above a hipped roof. The front facade includes two tiers of two semi-circular headed glazing bar sash windows, with a central blank space inscribed with the word "BAPTIST." There is a 20th-century red brick porch that has a boarded door and a rectangular fanlight above it, inscribed with "CHURCH 1804." Each return elevation has two tiers of four semi-circular headed glazing bar sash windows. Inside, the chapel retains panelled pulpits and an apsidal shaped gallery. This church was built to serve what is likely the oldest Baptist community in the country, which was noted during the martyrdom of Joan Bourchier in 1550.
