Description
This is a gardener's cottage with associated gates and walls forming a formal, later kitchen garden, situated within Waldershare Park. The gates and walls date back to the early 18th century and were part of the original design for Waldershare Park by William Talman. The walls are constructed of plum-coloured brick with red brick dressings and incorporate wrought ironwork.
The long sides of the enclosure are defined by low brick walls, approximately 2 feet high, topped with a stone cornice and simple iron railings. The western side features two gates with short gate piers. The southern end is formed by simple iron railings with a gate.
The main entrance is on the north front, where flanking brick walls rise to approximately 5 feet, then sweep up to taller piers reaching about 12 feet in height. These piers are constructed with red brick quoins and are capped with stone cornices and moulded leaden urns. Fixed wrought iron rails with scrolled piers support central double leaf gates hung from scrolled piers, the entire arrangement standing 12 feet high. The gates include low dog rails and simple cresting. The gates and enclosure are located at the head of an avenue of trees, with a path through them leading to a fountain within the woods to the south.
The garden cottage, dating to around 1830, is attached to the north side of the walled garden and built into a curved wall. It is mainly stuccoed, with painted brickwork on the first floor front, and has a slate roof. The cottage is two storeys high, with three windows across the front. The first floor features two six-pane sashes and a circular central window. The ground floor has two nine-pane sashes, set within cambered architraves. A central flush-panelled door is accessed via a later trelliswork porch. The rear elevation is built into the curved wall, with two six-pane sashes on the first floor and a later central window. The ground floor has two cambered openings with 20th-century doors, and a mid-19th century one-story extension featuring a plank door.
