Description
This is a row of eight headstones located 1 to 15 metres southeast of the Church of St Mary, dating from the 18th century. The headstones include one for William Byng, who died in 1718, featuring decorations of two skulls and an hourglass. Mildred Byng, the wife of William, has a headstone with similar decorations, though the date is not specified. There is a double headstone for William and Jane Byng, also undated, which includes a skull, bones, and palm fronds. Richard Dowker, who died in 1730, and Ann Matthews, who died in 1721, have identical stones adorned with double skulls. Joseph Greenstreet, who died in 1733, and John Greenstreet, who died in 1719, are set against each other; Joseph's stone features a winged cherub and scrolled head, while John's has a double head. One headstone, located about 15 metres south of the chancel, has its name and date obscured, but it includes a raised and fielded panel with a moulded surround and a skull in a nowy head.
