Description

The terrace at 31-53 Castle Street dates largely from the mid-19th century, with No. 53 specifically dated 1847. It is a terrace of varying design, built primarily of yellow brick with stone coping. The terrace is two or three storeys high. Nos. 47-51 feature mansard slate roofs with three dormers and dropped, moulded eaves cornices, along with sash windows retaining most of their original glazing bars. Nos. 31, 33 and 43 have three-light bays on the first floor. The ground floors mostly feature 19th-century shop fronts. No. 53 is characterized by three bow fronts. Nos. 47-51 have doorcases incorporating pilasters. The majority of the doorcases are round-headed, leading to steps at street level, with area railings present. The buildings from Nos. 1 to 53 (odd) contribute to a group value.
