Description

Fairfield House is an early 15th-century house located on Lower Street in Eastry. It features a timber frame, with some areas rendered and others showcasing exposed close-studding filled with plaster, topped by a plain tiled roof. The structure includes an aisled hall with cross-wings, consisting of a one-storey and attic central range flanked by two-storey hipped wings on either side. These wings project outward and feature jetties supported by dragon posts, with the right side returning to the wall and the left side extending to the rear.

The house has one gabled dormer and chimney stacks located at the center right, as well as at both ends. On the left side, there is one horizontally sliding sash window on each floor, a central wooden casement, and an additional wooden casement on the first floor, along with another horizontally sliding sash on the ground floor to the right. The entrance features a rib and stud door within a four-centred arched doorway with sunk spandrels positioned to the center right. Original mullioned windows are present on the left and right returns.

Inside, the house retains a screens passage with original front and rear doors in their respective doorways, along with twin doorways leading to a buttery built over a cellar and pantry. The screens truss, arcade posts, and arcade plate of the aisled hall are preserved, although the hall's crown post has been removed; the two wings still have their crown posts intact. The south wing features a 17th-century wall painting with a black and white lozenge pattern.
