Description
This group of three headstones is located about 1 to 5 metres south of the Church of St. Martin. The first headstone commemorates Richard Spain, who died in 1726. It stands approximately 3½ feet high and features a scrolled head adorned with motifs of crossed scythe and spade, along with crossed bones and a central skull. The second headstone is for Elizabeth Spain, dating from the early 18th century. It is about 2 feet high and has an inscription on a fielded panel, topped with a scrolled pediment that includes a skull, crossed bones, and crossed scythe and spade. Notably, the name of her father has been neatly chiselled out of the inscription. The third headstone marks the grave of John Spain, who died in 1777. It also stands about 3½ feet high and features a scrolled head with two winged cherubs' heads.
