Description

Maydekin Cottage is a house, dated 1646 and 1688. It is constructed of red brick in mixed English and Flemish bond, with some flint detailing, and has a plain tiled roof. The house comprises a single storey and attic with a two-storey cross-wing, set on a discontinuous plinth and featuring a hipped roof. Stacks are positioned centrally to the left and right, and there is a flat-roofed dormer. A gable is present to the right, with a plat band and cornice raised above two blocked windows on the first floor. This gable also features one wooden casement window on the first floor, one metal casement on the ground floor, and two wooden casements to the left on the ground floor. Two blocked doorways are located centrally to the right. A slate-roofed outshot extends to the right. Modern access to the property is via a boarded door in a 20th-century rear outshot. Several stones are embedded within the brickwork of the main (roadside) elevation, displaying a variety of initials and dates, including Latin inscriptions. The most significant stone references the Oxenden family and is dated 1646.
