Description
The walls and gateways to the front court of Betteshanger House were built in the late 19th century and designed by George Devey. They are constructed of brown brick, featuring stone finials and coping. The front courtyard is enclosed by a low wall that includes some flint and ragstone, extending approximately 20 meters to the east of the house and then about 50 meters further east, with semi-circular sweeps that create entrances to the courtyard. Iron lampstands are positioned on the wall. At the eastern end, the wall rises to about 5 feet and is topped with ball finials, while double leaf wrought iron gates are set in a semi-circular arched doorway, leading to a small sunk garden. This garden is bounded by a low brick wall that has a cornice and ball finials on the low corner piers. There are flights of steps that provide access to the south and east garden fronts of Betteshanger House.
