Description

The Church of St John the Baptist, originally listed as the Church of St John, is an important building located on Church Road in Sutton-at-Hone. It dates from the early 14th century and the 19th century, constructed from flint with stone dressings and featuring a tiled roof. The church includes an early 14th-century nave, chancel, and south aisle, along with a deep south porch from the 19th century. The west tower is in the Perpendicular style, complete with diagonal buttresses, crenellations, and a circular turret on the southeast corner. Notable features include a decorated east window, a chancel arch and piscina from the early 14th century, and an early 17th-century pulpit. The arcade was rebuilt by Ewan Christian in 1862. Inside, there is a large standing monument to Sir Thomas Smith, a navigator who died in 1625 and lived nearby at Brook Place, as well as two tablets commemorating Abraham Hill, who died in 1721, and Francisca Hill, who died in 1736, both likely created by Robert Taylor.
