Description
The House of Agnes Hotel, located at 71 St Dunstan's Street, is a 16th-century timber-framed house with a plastered front. The ground floor has been rebuilt in painted brick. The building stands three storeys high and features three gables. The first and second floors overhang on a moulded bressumer, with carved brackets supporting the second floor. In the 18th century, a curved pediment was added above the lower bressumer, resembling a hood over the doorway. The hotel has three windows, with casement windows on the second floor, late 17th-century bay windows with round-headed centres on the first floor, and two 18th-century bay windows on the ground floor. The doorcase is framed with a moulded design. The rear elevation is faced in brick and includes a gable extension. Inside, the hotel features exposed beams and panelling. This building inspired Charles Dickens' description of the House of Agnes Wickfield in "David Copperfield." The properties numbered 67 to 81 form a group with this building.
