Description
The Norman Staircase is a 12th-century structure located within the Cathedral Precincts, leading to the library of the King's School. It is believed to be the only 12th-century staircase in England. The staircase features 18 stone steps, with sides made of flint and ashlar. The roof is tiled and has a tile-hung gable. At the base, there are four columns adorned with Norman capitals and arches, along with a balustrade formed by pilasters. The staircase is part of a group that includes Nos 20 to 29A, the Pilgrim's or Pentise entry attached to No 29, a wall in the garden of No 29, wall and gatepiers between Nos 28 and 29, the Gateway from Green Court, and the adjoining building, all contributing to the historical context of the King's School and library.
