Description
The Chartham War Memorial is a war memorial made of rough-cast granite, built in 1920 to honor those who fell in World War I, with additional dedications to those who died in World War II. The memorial features a wheel-head (or Celtic) cross, with the west face adorned with a sword in relief that forms a second cross. It stands on a rectangular boulder-like plinth, which is set atop a two-step rectangular base.
The plinth has an incised panel on its west face that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF / CHARTHAM WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919." Below this inscription, the names of the fallen are listed in four columns, divided into ROYAL NAVY above and H. M. ARMY below, with the phrase "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE" beneath the names. The south face of the plinth lists the names of 30 individuals who died in World War II in two columns, also within an incised panel. The memorial is prominently located in front of the flint churchyard wall of the Grade I listed St Mary's Church.
The Chartham War Memorial was unveiled in October 1920 by Admiral Sir Doveton Sturdee and commemorates 60 men who were killed in World War I. At the time of the 1911 census, Chartham had a population of approximately 1,600. The memorial is designated at Grade II due to its significance as a testament to the impact of world events on the local community, its imposing design with a rough-cast finish, and its prominent position within a conservation area.
