Description
Nos 68 and 68A on Castle Street are two-storey buildings with a basement and attics, constructed in red brick. Although they are dated 1847, this likely refers to their refacing, as they are originally from the early 18th century. The buildings feature an old tiled roof with two end stacks and a curved gable on the left side, along with two curved dormers and a panelled parapet. The first floor has six sash windows with keystones, and the central window has a brick surround and curved gable. There is a stringcourse and a plinth, and the doorcase includes a keystone, quoins, and a rectangular fanlight. Inside, the buildings have spiral turned balusters, with two on each tread of the cut string staircase, shaped brackets, a swept rail, and column newels. There are also early 19th-century mantelpieces. Nos 68 to 77 and Nos 80 to 82 form a group.
