Description

Tonford Manor is a Grade II* listed building that features the remains of a fortified 15th-century house built by Sir Thomas Browne, who served as Controller and Treasurer to King Henry VI. The license to crenellate was granted in 1449. The oldest part of the exterior is the north front, which is two storeys high and constructed from stone rubble, flints, and red brick, topped with a hipped tiled roof. It has casement windows, including one window with three cinquefoil-headed lights and stone mullions, now restored, and another window with two lights that is missing its mullions.

At the north-west corner, there is a semi-circular bastion, likely one of the four round towers, featuring a red brick stringcourse and a diaper pattern of brick. The north-east corner has the remains of a similar bastion, both of which contain garderobes. The original building extended further west, where remnants of the north wall and two additional bastions with diaper patterned brickwork can be found. The north front also includes three double mullioned windows.

Behind the north front, the house has timber framing, while the west and south fronts were refaced with red brick in the 18th century. It is two storeys with an attic and has a hipped tiled roof, featuring two dormers facing south and one facing west, along with a stringcourse. There are six sash windows with intact glazing bars, and a modern gabled porch has been added.

Inside, the manor features a chestnut roof supported by three harmer beam trusses and moulded purlins, as well as some Tudor brick and stone fireplaces. Notably, Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon spent three days at this manor. The south-west side includes a 15th-century gatehouse made of flint with a stone arch.
