Description
Old Mead Farmhouse is a Grade II listed building, originally two cottages dating from the 16th century, possibly around 1520. The structure is two storeys high and features a timber frame that was refaced in red brick during the 18th century. It has a steeply-pitched hipped tiled roof and three windows, with casements except for one sash window that retains its original glazing. There is a modern gabled porch and a modern addition at the back. The building was known as Poors Farm from 1582 until late in the 20th century. The owner, John Taylor, left the dwelling and surrounding land in his will of 1581 "to relieve the poor," which is how the name originated. The property remained in Trust ownership until 1938.
