Description

Tudor Lodge Gift Shop and Peacock Antiques is a hall house that has been converted into shops. It dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame with a flint plinth and a plain tile roof. It has five framed bays, with the four bays to the right following a Wealden hall plan. The structure is two storeys tall with an attic, sitting on a plinth, and has a continuous first-floor jetty. There is a projecting gabled cross-wing on the right side. The right-hand framed bay is from the 17th century and has a close-studded cross-wing that includes a 20th-century ground floor bay window, a 17th-century first-floor oriel supported by a coved solid bracket, and a garret light. The two central recessed hall bays have later close-studded infill. Bays one and four showcase open-panelled, tension-braced "Kentish" framing. The ground floor is mostly from the 20th century, featuring irregular fenestration with 20th-century mullions and a ground floor bay window on the left. There is a 16th-century chamfered two-centred arched doorway on the left and a 20th-century shop door on the right. Inside, the partition to the cross-wing is close-studded, and there is reputed evidence of smoke-blackened roof timbers.
