Description

The terrace at 1-9 West Street dates to 1834. Originally, the central portion served as the village school; a separate building replaced it later in the 19th century. The terrace is constructed of red brick with a hipped slate roof and an eaves cornice. It comprises twelve windows in total. The central house is set forward and taller than the flanking houses, boasting six sash windows with intact glazing bars. The two central bays of the central house project further. A central porch, with its own hipped slate roof and eaves cornice, features a round-headed doorway topped with a semi-circular fanlight and an inner door of six panels. A stone panel above the doorway is inscribed: "These schools were erected by the Earl of Thanet in 1834." The wings have casement windows; Nos 7 and 8 have been altered, while Nos 1, 6, and 9 have later porches added.
