Description

Two headstones to the Down family are located about 20 metres south-west of the Church of St. Matthew. They date from the mid-18th century and are made of freestone. The headstones commemorate Benjamin Down and Daniel Down. Both are approximately 2½ feet high and feature different inscriptions in 'copperplate' script. Benjamin's headstone includes rocaille heads with an hourglass, a winged cherub, and trophies with scrolled shoulders, while Daniel's headstone displays an open book, a cherub, and an hourglass.
