Description

Mountfield is a house with an attached former stable block, dating from the early 19th century for the house and the late 18th century for the stable block. The stable range is timber framed, tile hung on a painted brick ground floor, and has a plain tiled roof. The house is constructed of painted brick with a slate roof. It stands two storeys high on a plinth and features a plat band and wide eaves to its hipped roof, with stacks located to the left and rear right.

The front of the house has a regular arrangement of three glazing bar sashes with louvred shutters on the first floor, and two on the ground floor, flanking central double half-glazed doors that are topped with a moulded flat hood supported by brackets. The left return of the house has a door made up of six raised and fielded panels with a flat hood above. The right return features three glazing bar sashes on the first floor and two restored deeply bowed windows with margin lights and curved steps, along with a central French window.

At the rear left, the former stable range projects and includes three glazing bar sashes on the first floor and two Gothick arched sashes on the ground floor, with a boarded door to the left and a central passageway opening. Inside, there is a fluted marble fireplace on the ground floor and wooden moulded fireplaces in the upper rooms, all featuring fine cast iron grates. The geometric staircase has stick balusters on carved tread-ends, with a ramped and wreathed handrail. All major window and bow openings have sliding internal shutters. The property was undergoing extensive repair and restoration at the time of the survey.
