Description
Tinton is a house that was rebuilt in the mid-18th century for John Howland, Gent. It was altered in the early 19th century and has an earlier core. The building is rendered and has a plain tiled roof. It stands two storeys high on a plinth, featuring boxed eaves on a hipped roof with stacks at the rear left and rear right. The front has a regular arrangement of five glazing bar sash windows on the first floor and four on the ground floor, with a central half-glazed door set in an arched moulded surround within a large gabled porch. The porch has an arched entry on the left side. At the rear, there is a catslide outshot and a projecting gabled wing. The cellars and parts of the rear core are reported to be remnants of a timber-framed building. Historical records by Igglesden note the discovery of older work at this site. Tinton was once the home of Jeremiah Curtis, an early 18th-century leader of the Hawkhurst smuggling gang.
