Description
Coombe Manor is a house that dates back to the 14th century, with significant alterations made in 1871. It features a timber frame that is exposed and restored, with plaster infill. The rear is partly clad in tile hanging and has been extended with red brick. The roofs are plain tiled. The building has a hall house plan with cross wings, and the service wing was rebuilt in 1871. It consists of one storey and an attic for the hall, and a two-storey cross wing that has a jetty supported by a dragon post. The cross wing has a hipped roof, with a truncated stack projecting at the left end, another stack at the centre right, and at the right end, there is a two-storey 19th-century block that features a plinth, plat, and hipped roof, with four glazing bar sashes on each floor. The framed portion includes mullioned and transomed windows, as well as a central hipped dormer. A four-centred arched 20th-century plank door is located in a raking porch to the centre right.
Inside, the building retains a base cruck hall truss, which is one of only two or three remaining in Kent. This truss has curved braces and hollow chamfered moulding that extends from the base of the crucks along the braces to a massive moulded tie beam, topped by a tall moulded octagonal crown post. Although most rafters were replaced in the mid-20th century, some original smoke-blackened rafters remain. The wall to the north of the house contains some reset stonework, which suggests that the house had a stone Gothic porch before the 1930s. This stonework appears to be from the 19th century but may indicate an earlier stone-built house that was later added to by the framed wing and subsequently replaced by the 19th-century brick wing.
