Description
Peirce House, located at 33 Charing High Street, is a Grade II* listed building that dates back to the 13th century. Originally used as almshouses by the Sayers family, it features an alms window on the west side. The structure is timber-framed, with some exposed timbering and close studding on the north wall, while the first and attic storeys have herringbone brick infill and the ground floor is rendered. The house has two overhanging gables, one of which is very wide. The first floor overhangs significantly on brackets and includes a moulded wooden bressummer with crenellations. There are three casement windows with renewed heads and small square leaded panes, along with a wide 4-centred wooden doorway that has carved spandrels. Inside, there is a small portion of a Norman undercroft, a 15th-century crown post roof, solid block stairs from the 15th century, an inglenook fireplace, and a screens passage.
