Description
The Church of St Nicholas is a Grade I listed building located on the north-east side of The Street in Pluckley. It features a chancel, south chapel, nave with a south aisle, a south Parvis porch, and a west tower topped with a broached shingled spire. The chancel, nave, and tower date from the 14th century, while the south or Dering chapel, the south aisle, and the porch were built in the 15th century. Inside, the nave has a crown post roof supported by five crown posts, with two small round windows above the easternmost crown post. The church also includes a piscina and double sedilia, as well as box pews. The churchyard is notable for its 18th-century chest tombs, early 18th-century headstones featuring crude skull and crossbones, and 18th and early 19th-century headstones adorned with motifs such as cherubs, heavenly crowns, hourglasses, sunrays, and reapers with sickles. Some early 19th-century headstones also feature cast iron cherubs and oval bodystones.
