Description
The Rectory, formerly known as Friars School, is a building located on the north-west side of The Street in Great Chart. It was built in 1818 by the Reverend Thomas Manners Sutton, who served as Rector until 1852. However, the north wing of the building appears to date from the 18th century, suggesting that the 1818 construction mainly involved the addition of the south-east wing.
The Rectory is two storeys high and constructed of stone rubble, featuring red brick window dressings and quoins. The glazing bars are intact. The north wing has four windows and a hipped tiled roof. The south-west wing, which projects slightly, has two windows and a hipped slate roof. This wing also features an unusual doorcase with enriched pilasters, a projecting cornice, and a square fanlight, along with a brick chimney breast that is corbelled out above it on the first floor. The south-west wing is a later addition from the 19th century.
