Description

The chest tomb and headstone located 1 to 3 metres south of the Church of St. Matthew is a Grade II listed structure. The tomb commemorates Edward Maylam, who died in 1744. It features a moulded top slab supported by fluted and gadrooned baluster piers, along with raised and fielded panels that have cut away corners. The headstone is dedicated to Thomas Maylam, who passed away in 1779, and stands about 2 feet high. It has scallop-scrolled shoulders leading to a corded scrolled cornice with a central scallop, and includes a worn cherub set within a sunburst motif.
