Description

The Courtyard, comprising Stable Cottage, Dairy Cottage, garages, and Shepherd's Cottage, is a group of buildings dating from the 17th century, located in Great Chart, Godinton Park. The entrance is on the north side and features a round-headed stone carriage archway flanked by pedestrian archways. Above this is a shaped Dutch gable that contains a cartouche, with projections on either side that create a half-H shape. Behind the west projection is a long building, originally stables but now a garage, which has a brick modillion eaves cornice, a tiled roof, and three doorways with rectangular fanlights and flat hoods, to which tiled canopies have been added later. The rear elevation has round-headed windows. Beyond the east projection is Stable Cottage, which is part of the garages. Dairy Cottage, attached to Stable Cottage, is from the 19th century and has two storeys, with a ground floor of red brick and a tile-hung first floor. It features two shaped gables, two casement windows, and a doorcase with a cartouche of the Toke family. To the southeast is Shepherd's Cottage, another 17th-century building in red brick with a tiled roof that has undergone significant alterations and additions. Its east front has a shaped Dutch gable with an octagonal clock face and a wooden bell turret topped with an ogee-shaped lead canopy.
