Description

Chilham Mills is a watermill complex that includes a mill house, a storage building, and a bridge, dating from around 1850 and altered in the mid-20th century. The mill house, located to the north, is constructed of brick and features a tiled roof. It consists of two parallel ranges, is two storeys high, and has three windows. Some of the windows are mid-19th century tripartite sashes, while others are 20th-century casements. The entrance has a central doorcase with pilasters and a pediment, and the half-hipped roof is topped with three tall brick chimney stacks.

To the south, the attached mill is a tall structure with four storeys and attics. The ground floor is made of brick, while the upper floors are weatherboarded. It has a tiled roof with two dormers that feature carved bargeboards. The east elevation includes casements with four central panes that open, along with a 16-pane sash window on the top floor. There is a lean-to brick extension that houses the water wheel, which also has a tiled roof. The rear of the mill has casements with centre four panes that open, a loading door on the first floor, and a lucarn on the top floor.

Adjacent to the mill is a two-storey storage building made of brick and weatherboarding, also with a tiled roof and casement windows. The entire complex is built over a brick bridge that has one cambered arch and two round-headed arches. The interior of the mill is notably well-preserved, containing a paddle wheel, millstones, grain bins, and hoppers.
