Description
Tavern Cottage is a hall house dating from around 1500. It features a timber frame that is exposed in some areas, with plaster infill and part of the building clad in red brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The house has a truncated Wealden design; the expected jettied bay on the right was destroyed by fire in the 18th century, which is shown by the red brick cladding on that end wall. The remaining three framed bays are two storeys high and sit on a plinth, with the left framed bay jettied at the first floor. The roof is hipped with gablets and has a central ridge stack that has been inserted into the old screens passage. The two framed bays on the right were originally part of a recessed central hall. The windows are arranged irregularly, with three in total. There are 19th-century brick mullion windows on the ground and first floors to the right, casements on the first floor to the left, and chamfered brick mullioned lights, possibly from the 16th century, in the centre. Inside, there is a crown post roof. The entrance to the house has been moved to the rear, with the original entry to the screens passage still visible in the exposed central frame.
