Description

Bachelors Farm is a house with origins in the 17th century, featuring alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries, and a late 20th-century extension. The building is timber framed, with a ground floor primarily constructed of Flemish bond brick and tile-hung above. It has a plain tile roof and a central chimney. There is a later parallel rear wing, which may have originally been an outshut; both wings have retained separate roof trusses but now share a later roof structure.

The front elevation includes five-pane wide sash windows on either side of a modern front door, which has cover strips and an overlight. The first floor features five two-light windows with small panes, while the second floor has two hipped dormers with late 20th-century windows.

Inside, the house retains jowl posts in the center front first floor bay, along with posts that have carpenters' marks and pegholes at rail or brace level along the entire rear elevation of the original wing, both at the first floor and partly at the ground floor. There are chamfered beams, some with run-out stops, on the first and ground floors, as well as a wall-plate. The roof structure includes a clasped purlin collar truss roof with a newer roof above it, covering the rear wing. The stairs lead to the second floor, which has old ledged doors by the entrance to the second floor stairs and four-panel doors on the first and ground floors. Additionally, there are three 19th-century fireplace surrounds on the first floor.
