Description
Tower Lodge and Flanking Walls at Eastwell Park were built in 1848 by William Burn. The structure is made of knapped, squared, and coursed flint, featuring ashlar quoins, window dressings, and banding. The tower lodge stands three storeys tall, with four corner turrets, each rising to four storeys and adorned with ashlar quoins and dressings on a plinth. The ground floor has a square section, while the upper storeys are octagonal with a weathered base. There is a string course at the first floor, a moulded stone cornice at the second floor, and an entablature with a cornice at the ogeed cupola. The windows are chamfered stone mullioned, with two lights on the ground floor and a single light above on alternate faces.
The central two-storey gateway features wrought iron double gates and an ornate wrought iron overthrow. The gateway is framed by heavy strap-work and rusticated pilasters, leading to a rusticated arch with strap-work in the spandrels. Above this, a string course with a carved fleur-de-Lys frieze is present over the second-floor chamber, which has single-light chamfered windows on either side of a full achievement with grotesque pilasters that support an entablature with a cornice and a pierced balustrade. Inside, the chamber over the gateway displays a mosaic depicting Alexander the Great's victories.
The flanking walls are six feet high and sweep outwards for 25 yards on either side, constructed of squared coursed flintwork with ashlar-quoined piers, ball finials, and stone balustrades. These walls are terminated by panelled piers topped with large crowned lions bearing coats of arms. Beyond this, the wall continues for an additional 25 yards on either side, made of uncoursed flint with coping stones.
