Description

Old Ship Cottages are two cottages dating from the 16th and 18th centuries. The buildings have a timber-frame structure with some exposed sections, brick infill, and some flint used in the rebuilding and addition. The roof is covered with old plain tiles.

The cottages feature a four-bay timber-frame design with a large central hall bay. To the left, there is a low 18th-century bay, and to the rear of the right two bays, there is an 18th-century three-bay wing. The road-facing side has four bays and is one and a half storeys high, with a low two-storey bay on the left. A 19th-century door is located to the right of the center, and there are 19th-century two and three-light casement windows with glazing bars. The timber-frame is exposed above the windows in the left two bays. The 18th-century flint bay has blocked doors and windows.

Above the left two bays, there are two eyebrow dormers with two and three-light casements. The roof is half-hipped on the left, with a lower slate roof on the 18th-century bay. A large chimney stack is situated on the ridge above the door. The right rear wing has three bays and is one and a half storeys high, featuring 19th-century doors at the inner end of the end bay, along with two and three-light camber head casements and a four-light casement at the road end. Above the center and road end bays, there are eyebrow dormers with 19th-century three-light casements and a two-light casement positioned at an intermediate level between them. The roof of this wing has a lower ridge than the front roof, with a ridge stack located over the door at the inner end. All windows throughout the cottages have glazing bars.
