Description
40 Chesil Street is a house in a row that dates from the 16th or 17th century, or possibly earlier. It has a timber-frame structure that was re-fronted in painted brick around the early 19th century. The roof is covered with clay plain tiles and features a tile-hung gable end, along with old clay crested ridge tiles. At the rear, there is a large rendered lateral stack.
The building is two storeys high with an attic and has a single-bay range that runs parallel to the street, with a wing at the rear. The east front is painted brick and includes a parapet, 20th-century three-light casements, and a 20th-century plank door on the right side. There is also a gabled dormer with a casement. The gable-ended timber-framed wing at the rear is a notable feature. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to have a clasped-purlin roof structure.
