Description

The Old Post Office is a house with a former post office wing, dating back to the 17th century. It was largely encased in brick during the 18th century and extended in the early 19th century. The building has a timber-frame core, now encased and extended in colourwashed brick, with an old plain tile and slate roof. It presents an end facade to the road, forming an L-shape with an added wing and projecting rear section.

The front elevation is two-and-a-half storeys and three bays, with an additional bay added to the right. The right bay contains a late 17th-century structure. An early 19th-century shop front features a door with a window to one side, incorporating pilasters and shutters. A 19th-century casement window is present, with another above, and a stack on the front wall to the left. A 19th-century door and casement are in the left bay.

The side elevation is also two-and-a-half storeys and three bays, with a fourth bay to the right. A small projecting porch with a moulded cornice contains a 19th-century four-panel door. Four irregular 19th-century casement windows with segmental heads are visible. Above the left three windows are three-light casement windows, with hipped dormers, the central one being at a higher level. A large ridge stack sits above the door, and another projecting stack is in the left corner. It is believed to be the oldest post office in the county, having begun operating on March 17th, 1845.
