Description
The war memorial in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church is made of wood and limestone and commemorates those who fell in the wars from 1914 to 1918.
The memorial features a well-carved wooden crucifixion with an INRI scroll and gable above, located on the north side of the churchyard. The crucifixion is set into a lead socket, which is mounted on a limestone base that includes a shaft. The shaft displays the dates 1914 above 1918, with the names of the fallen inscribed on either side of the base. At the foot of the base, there is a projecting kerb inscribed with the legend: "TO THE TENDER AND LOVING HANDS OF THE ALL MERCIFUL SAVIOUR WE COMMEND THE SOULS OF OUR BRETHEREN WHO FROM THIS PARISH AND CONGREGATION RESPONDED TO THE CALL OF DUTY FOUGHT FOR THE FLAG AND DIED FOR THE COUNTRY." The base rests on a concrete plinth surrounded by concrete pavers. The crucifixion and inscription face southwest, while the other sides of the memorial are plain. The entire structure stands about 3.5 meters high.
The history of the memorial's construction is not documented, and it is not listed in the National Inventory of War Memorials. It serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of the First World War on the local community and is recognized for its simple yet elegant design and quality craftsmanship.
