Description
The School at Winchester College, built in 1687, is a notable example of late 17th-century architecture, although it is attributed to Sir Christopher Wren, which is not likely. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features one lofty storey. The centre of the façade projects forward beneath a pediment, and it has a modillion eaves cornice with a hipped tiled roof. There are six round-headed windows and a central door topped with a bowed pediment. Above the door is a figure in an enriched niche, a statue of the founder created by C.G. Cibber in 1692. The building is adorned with very fine garlands over the windows. Inside, there is an impressive plaster ceiling, a chandelier from 1729, and two Flemish tapestries. All the listed buildings on College Street are part of a group.
