Description
Crossways is a cottage dating from the mid 18th century and early 19th century. It is constructed of flint and brick, with some cob, and features a thatched roof. The front, facing south, has one storey and an attic, with three windows. The roof is half-hipped at the east end, revealing the exposed frame in the gable, while the west end has a hipped roof that slopes to low eaves above outshots on the west side of the north elevation. The eaves are raised above the upper windows and lowered above a 20th-century porch. The walls are made of flint with brick dressings, including quoins, cambered arches, bands, and diamond patterns in the upper band, as well as a small panel with a recessed stone panel and a plinth. The north gable and the north wall on the east side feature coursed knapped flint with a brick band at the eaves, first floor, and plinth level. The windows are casements, and a former doorway has been filled in, now leading to the 20th-century porch. Several bricks are inscribed with the dates EN 1740, FJ 1742, ET, and TT.
