Description
N J Stokes Garage is a building located in Stockbridge, dating from the late 19th century. It has a rendered or colourwashed brick exterior, with a roof made of corrugated iron and slate. The structure is L-shaped, featuring a two-storey, three-bay section facing the road, and a taller, wider two-bay section at the far end. The road-facing end includes a 20th-century shop front with a four-pane sash window above and an awning on the gable.
On the side, the ground floor is rendered and features two canted bays with pilasters at the corners, four-pane sash windows, and a large door with sidelights and a fanlight in the far bay. The first floor has a verandah supported by open timber columns, with bowed cast iron balusters, beneath four-pane sashes and French windows, and an awning above. The balcony extends in front of the other section of the building, showcasing a four-pane sash window with pilasters and a wide passage. Above, there is a large canted bay with pilasters at the corners and a gable with an awning. This building was once the residence of Lillie Langtry during her time in Stockbridge with the Prince of Wales, who later became Edward VII. Old oil cans are now displayed on the balcony.
