Description
Rookery Farmhouse, dating to 1776, is a Georgian house with strong associations with William Cobbett. The symmetrical south-east front is of two storeys and three windows, with a hipped roof featuring moulded brick eaves and carved dentils. The facade is constructed of blue headers with flush red dressings, quoins, vertical panels framing the windows, a prominent first-floor band, and a stepped plinth. The windows are sashes with exposed frames, with triple panes except for the central window. A doorway is sheltered by a moulded brick canopy with a panelled soffit and carved brackets, leading to a panelled and glazed door, accessed by a single step. The side elevations exhibit a Flemish bond brick pattern with blue headers. The rear elevation incorporates horizontal flint panels. The southern projection mirrors the front features, while other parts have been altered. A low wing to the north has been raised to two stories and topped with a flat roof. This wing displays an incised brick marking "A.H. 1776." A brick boundary wall bears an incised marking "W.C. 1825," reportedly carved by William Cobbett. The interior retains many original features, including a staircase, panelled doors within architraves, dado panelling, and a corner cupboard.
